Unexpected Adoption: The Truth Behind the ‘Blind Side’ Family’s Unexpected Bond with Michael Oher

Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the Tennessee couple famous for taking in NFL player Michael Oher, recently responded to Oher’s allegations that they tricked him and lied about his adoption. The Tuohys clarified that while they never legally adopted Oher, they still considered him part of their family. Oher, who became a member of the Tuohy household at the age of 18, claimed that the couple presented him with adoption papers to sign, but they were actually conservatorship documents. The conservatorship was put in place to allow Oher to play college football without breaking NCAA rules that prohibit donor influence. The Tuohys stated that the conservatorship was necessary for Oher to attend Ole Miss, their alma mater. Oher also accused the couple of profiting off him and signing over his likeness rights to Twentieth Century Fox for the movie “The Blind Side.” The Tuohys denied these claims, saying that the negotiations and financial arrangements were handled by author Michael Lewis, not them. They also mentioned that all proceeds from the film were split evenly between themselves, their biological children, and Oher. The couple expressed their willingness to terminate the conservatorship but asked the court to deny Oher’s request for financial damages. Oher’s attorney, Don Barrett, stated that they are confident the truth will prevail in court.
