Understanding the Trend of TikTok’s Horror-Movie-Inspired Grimace Shake

It’s intriguing how we never viewed a sentient purple blob that hangs out with a clown as anything other than a source of nightmares.

TikTokers have initiated a delightfully humorous trend inspired by a McDonald’s promotion. To celebrate Grimace’s 52nd birthday, the fast-food chain has introduced a limited-time Grimace Shake. This frozen berry-flavored treat is a tribute to Grimace’s iconic color and sweetness.

Although the promotion seems innocent, Gen Z on TikTok has transformed it into something entirely different.

Since June 12, social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter have been flooded with videos under the #GrimaceShake hashtag. These videos follow a similar, yet highly amusing format.

In each video, users wish Grimace a happy birthday and then take a sip of the shake. However, after the sip, the TikTok typically descends into a mini-horror movie where Grimace and his sinister concoction bring about a gruesome demise for the sipper.

It seems that most people creating these Grimace Shake TikToks don’t necessarily grasp the underlying meme, but find it amusing nonetheless. However, McDonald’s and some former employees’ actions and words do contribute to Grimace’s creepy reputation.

For instance, McDonald’s promoted the Grimace Shake by having the character take over its TikTok account. The videos featuring Grimace are somewhat unsettling, although intended to be lighthearted and sweet.

Furthermore, the manager of a McDonald’s franchise in Canada revealed an “unofficial” explanation of Grimace’s origin story in 2021, and it’s a bit peculiar.

According to Brian Bate, Grimace is an enormous taste bud meant to convey that the food tastes good.

However, the true essence of the Grimace Shake trend may simply be absurdity.

At least that’s what the TikToker @thefrazmaz, who claims to have started the trend, says its purpose is. He explained that it’s just a meme and compared it to the unconventional nature of the Spider-Verse burger.

So there you have it! Enjoy a good night’s sleep!
