The USMNT suffered penalty shootout heartache at the hands of Panama in the Gold Cup semi-final despite a stunning equalizer from forward Jesus Ferreira in extra-time, as the minnows seal their first final appearance in a decade (2013).

Seattle Sounders midfielder Christian Roldon missed the second of two penalty kicks saved by Panamanian goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, who plays for Venezuelan club Carabobo.

Ferreira, who drew the US level in the 105th minute with a remarkable volley inside the penalty box, also had his penalty saved by Mosquera.

Panama took the lead in the 99th minute thanks to defender Ivan Anderson, who scored his first international goal on an open goal after US goalkeeper Matt Turner rushed out to try to clear a forward pass but was beaten to it.

This is the first time since 2003 that the U.S. has failed to reach the Gold Cup final. Mexico and Brazil competed in the final back then, with Mexico winning 1-0 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
