Uncovering Android 14’s Multi-Profile Update Bug: Google’s Investigation Revealed

Google is currently investigating a bug in Android 14 that has been causing significant problems for users with multiple profiles. On October 27th, a Google representative acknowledged the bug and assured users that the team is actively working on a solution.

Thank you for your patience. Our team is currently investigating a storage issue that is affecting certain Pixel devices running Android 14. We are diligently working on developing a fix for this issue and will provide more details in due course.

On October 29th, a Google community manager provided further updates on the issue, stating that it is affecting some Pixel 6 and later models. Google is actively working on fixing the problem and anticipates that a forthcoming system update will resolve the issue and allow access to media files without the need for a factory reset. They are also exploring methods to recover data for devices stuck in a boot loop.

Although Google has released a Google Play system update to prevent the issue from affecting more devices, the company recommends that Pixel owners who have not yet been affected refrain from creating or logging into secondary user profiles until a complete fix is available.

Initially, reports of the issue mainly came from Pixel 6 owners who experienced problems after the update. However, Ars Technica reported that the Google issue tracker for the problem has grown rapidly, with over 350 replies from owners of various devices. Users have encountered a range of issues, including missing apps, frequent crashes, and being unable to access internal storage on their devices.

Currently, the issue tracker has received over 510 replies, with some users sharing log files and screen images to illustrate the problem. Several users have mentioned that they are unable to provide on-device screenshots due to insufficient storage. Many have likened their experience to being infected with ransomware.

Update October 30th, 5:59AM ET: Updated with additional Google statement on work to fix the issue.
