Uncommon Hotel Room Service Requests: Strangest Ones

Have you ever heard of someone ordering melted ice cream, diet water, or cockle popcorn from hotel room service? Believe it or not, these are real customer requests that hotel staff members have shared.

In a recent report published by Hotels.com, titled the “Room Service Report,” they surveyed 473 hotels in 10 countries to assess the current state of in-room dining. The report reveals the top 10 oddest requests, which include boiled bottled water and a guest bringing their own fish to be cooked.

Here is the complete list of the survey’s strangest requests:

  1. Diet water.
  2. Melted ice cream.
  3. Blowfish.
  4. Boiled bottled water.
  5. A cooked fish that the guest brought with them.
  6. Cockle popcorn.
  7. No-egg-white omelette.
  8. Rice bowl for a dog.
  9. Bison.
  10. Eggless eggs in hell (shakshuka).

Aside from these bizarre requests, the report also found that burgers are the most popular room service order, surpassing pizza, club sandwiches, tacos, and fries. This trend is consistent across all countries included in the survey, including the United States.

According to Melanie Fish, a spokesperson for Hotels.com, room service holds a special place in the hearts and stomachs of hotel guests. She explains, “There’s a comfort to dining in, which is probably why burgers top the list of most popular room service orders not just in the U.S. but also globally.”

The report also highlights that 45% of U.S. hotels have seen an increase in demand for room service, with 27% of guests splurging and spending over $100 on this amenity. Additionally, some hotels are taking room service to the next level by offering non-food experiences. For example, The Milestone Hotel in London offers in-room concerts by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the DogHouse Columbus Hotel in Ohio provides in-room beer taps and a mini fridge stocked with ‘shower beer’ in the bathroom.

If you’re looking for an extravagant room service experience, The Post Oak Hotel in Houston offers the $1,600 “Black Gold Burger,” made with wagyu beef, seared foie gras, and black truffle in a caviar-infused black and gold brioche bun.

So, the next time you stay in a hotel, don’t be afraid to indulge in some tasty room service options or request something a little out of the ordinary. After all, it’s all part of the experience!
