UK’s 2023 Report on Diversity and Compensation

Insider’s Latest Diversity and Compensation Report (UK): Tracking Progress, Diversity, and Equity

We are excited to present Insider’s latest Diversity and Compensation Report for the UK. This comprehensive report provides us with critical data to assess our progress in diversity and equity on an annual basis. Our goal is to continually improve and innovate in attracting, supporting, and developing talent from diverse backgrounds.

To assist us in evaluating our diversity data year over year, we have partnered with Littler Mendelson, a specialized law firm in pay equity analysis and DEI. This partnership enables us to gain valuable insights and identify trends that will further enhance our progress.

Key Highlights of the Report:

1. Racial Diversity: The overall racial diversity within our workforce has remained consistent over the past two years, demonstrating our commitment to inclusivity.

2. Pay Gap: While we acknowledge that pay gaps exist, it is important to note that our compensation data does not factor in variables such as experience and area of focus. The pay gap for female employees increased by 4 pence, indicating an area that requires attention. However, we saw a significant improvement of 11 pence in the pay gap for BIPOC employees.

3. New Hires: The demographics of our new hires have experienced drops in both gender and race/ethnicity diversity. This serves as a reminder of the importance of actively promoting diversity during the hiring process.

Demographics of Insider UK: A Closer Look

Our report includes demographic and pay data as of March 15, 2023, encompassing a total of 119 full-time staff members, including 46 individuals in leadership positions. To protect employee anonymity, we have aggregated race/ethnicity into three categories: Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC); white; and undisclosed.

Insider UK Workforce: Figures 1 and 2

Our Insider UK workforce has a higher percentage of female and white employees, which has remained consistent since 2021. The percentages of male, BIPOC, and undisclosed races have also remained relatively stable.

New Hires at Insider UK: Figuring Out the Future

We pay particular attention to the demographics of our new hires as they shape our future workforce. In our previous reports, we accounted for 25 new hires in 2021 and 40 new hires in 2022. This current report factors in 35 new hires, revealing some volatility due to the smaller sample size. However, we have noticed an approaching gender balance in the composition of new hires since 2021. In terms of race/ethnicity, there has been a decrease of 14 percentage points in BIPOC representation since 2022.

Compensation: Achieving Fairness

Figures 5 and 6 illustrate the relative pay of female and BIPOC employees compared to their counterparts (males/white). It is important to note that these figures do not consider legitimate factors such as experience and type of work that may influence differences in pay.

In 2023, female Insider UK employees received 90 cents for every dollar earned by male employees, indicating a 4 pence drop from the previous year. On the other hand, BIPOC UK employees received 95 pence for every dollar earned by white employees, representing an 11 pence improvement since 2022.

Continuing Towards Progress: Training, Partnerships, and Investment in DEI

Training:

We have developed new training sessions, workshops, panels, and guides for 2022/2023 to promote inclusive reporting on the trans community, improve coverage of disability, and address imposter syndrome. Additionally, we actively support applications to various external workshops and training sessions. Our Learning and Development team has expanded its roster with more diverse coaches and a broader range of topics.

Partnerships:

We continue our partnership with The Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF), contributing to bursaries for journalists from diverse backgrounds to complete their NCTJ journalism training. We also chair bursary panels with the JDF, which reward recipients with bursaries and provide opportunities to enter the journalism industry. We have initiated a mentorship scheme for JDF candidates, allowing them to be mentored by our Insider UK journalists. Additionally, we host events in collaboration with the JDF and NCTJ to guide recipients in starting a career in journalism. Our university and college outreach program aims to promote Insider fellowship opportunities to universities across the UK, with a focus on lower socio-economic areas. Furthermore, we have partnered with Diversity Mark NI to prioritize DEI efforts within Belfast’s tech community.

Investment in DEI:

To further support our employees, we have promoted Fritzie Andrade to Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Insider. Kadia Tubman has assumed the role of Managing Editor, DEI, in the newsroom. Together, they will work with staff and leadership to improve our work and culture through the lens of DEI. Joel Marino, an Insider veteran with a background in Latino and LGBTQ+ media, will oversee the new Workplace Experience (WEX) department, merging learning and development with employee experience initiatives. The WEX department aims to bridge theory and practice, fostering connections within our hybrid workforce and providing coaching for staff mentorship. In addition, we will relaunch company ERGs in Q4 of 2023, alongside our existing ERGs, to further foster diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization.

Conclusion:

Insider remains committed to progress in diversity and equity. Through ongoing training, strategic partnerships, and investments in DEI, we aspire to create an inclusive and empowering work environment. By embracing diversity, we strengthen our team and ensure that Insider remains at the forefront of innovation and creativity. Together, we will continue to make significant strides towards a more diverse and equitable future.
