Ukraine Still Unprepared for NATO Membership

President Biden dismissed the idea of Ukraine joining NATO in a recent interview with CNN. He emphasized that the war with Russia must first come to an end before further discussions on Ukraine’s membership. Biden explained that there is a lack of unanimity within NATO regarding Ukraine’s immediate inclusion, as it would require a commitment to defend all NATO territories. He stated, “If the war is ongoing, then we’re all at war with Russia.”

During the interview, Biden mentioned his conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and the continued support the United States intends to provide in terms of security and weaponry during the ongoing invasion. Biden acknowledged that Ukraine still has qualifications to meet, including democratization, before it can qualify for NATO membership. He also mentioned that the process is expected to take a while. The topic of Ukraine’s potential membership, as well as Sweden’s possible membership, will be discussed at the upcoming NATO summit in Lithuania, which Biden will attend during his trip to Europe this week.
