Viewers of Channel 4’s Alone UK were left perplexed following the premiere episode, which introduced a group of “unprepared city dwellers” attempting to survive in the Canadian wilderness. The British adaptation of the popular American show premiered last night and featured 11 contestants exploring an area four times the size of the UK near the Mackenzie River in Northwest Canada. Dropping each participant alone in an area close to the Arctic Circle, which is home to over 3,000 bears along with other wildlife, the show challenges them to sustain themselves for as long as possible. The contestant who lasts the longest wins a prize of £100,000. Unlike the American and Australian versions, which cast survival experts, the British competitors had little to no survival training prior to a nine-day course they underwent on the show. One viewer expressed their disappointment with the cast, stating, “This lot are all from the city with no skills and no common sense.”
One of the cast members is Naomi, a 26-year-old fashion designer from Chelsea, west London. After setting up camp on the first night, Naomi expressed her unease in the wilderness, shortly before encountering a bear. Naomi admitted that she “gets lost in Tesco” but enjoys outdoor activities and wanted to challenge herself on the show. In the next scene, a bear is shown dangerously close to Naomi’s shelter, causing her to shout at it to leave. The next day, Naomi described it as the “scariest night of her life.” Interestingly, Naomi fared better than another contestant, Mike, a 49-year-old joiner from Manchester who was forced to leave the show after just four hours. While building a shelter, Mike accidentally injured himself with an axe and required stitches. Mike spoke about his past struggles with addiction and believed that his experience of enduring and overcoming suffering would give him an advantage in this survival challenge.
Despite the entertainment value, some viewers questioned the casting choices of Alone UK. One viewer expressed hope that Canadians and Americans do not watch the show, stating that there are survivalists in the UK, just not among the current contestants. Others noted that the American version typically features survival experts or individuals with extensive outdoor experience, while the British cast consists primarily of city dwellers with PR and marketing backgrounds. Some viewers expressed concern about the safety of the contestants in bear country, while others found humor in the contrast between the contestants’ lack of survival skills and the challenging environment.
