UK sanctions remain in place as Abramovich associate fails to overturn them

Mr. Abramovich, known for his close ties to Vladimir Putin’s regime, was among the first Russians to face UK sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In fact, he was even proposed as a negotiator to help resolve the invasion, with personal approval from Mr. Putin himself, as stated by the High Court. Mr. Shvidler, a long-time friend turned business associate of Abramovich, also has connections to Evraz, a Russian steel company listed in London. However, he resigned from the Evraz board on the very same day he was sanctioned.

In his pursuit to overturn the March 2022 sanctions, Mr. Shvidler took matters into his own hands and personally wrote to Liz Truss, the then Foreign Secretary, making a case for himself. Nevertheless, the court heard that his lawyer, Michael O’Kane, intends to appeal Friday’s judgment at the earliest opportunity. O’Kane emphasized that Mr. Shvidler, who resides in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, has not been a citizen of Russia for over 15 years and has been critical of the Russian government’s actions in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abramovich is currently seeking to overturn invasion-related sanctions imposed on him by the EU in addition to partially overturning a UK ruling that accused him of destabilizing Ukraine. It’s worth noting that the UK has imposed sanctions on approximately 1,600 individuals in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
