UK Regulators Receive New Activision Deal Proposal from Microsoft

The original attempt by Microsoft to acquire Activision was blocked by the CMA in April due to concerns about monopolizing the cloud gaming market. Activision claimed that this decision portrayed Britain as “closed for business.” Despite this, Microsoft appealed the ruling and the new proposal involving Ubisoft is now under investigation by regulators.

Under this new proposal, Ubisoft would have the ability to license Activision games to other cloud streaming providers such as PlayStation Plus and Nvidia’s GeForce Now. It’s worth noting that the EEA is not included in this proposal as Microsoft has separate obligations under the EU agreement.

The revised deal addresses one of the CMA’s main concerns, which is Microsoft’s potential to release games exclusively on its own streaming service. However, the approval of the new deal from the CMA is still required.

“We will carefully and objectively assess the details of the restructured deal and its impact on competition, including the opinions of third parties,” stated Ms. Cardell. “Our objective remains unchanged – ensuring that the expanding cloud gaming market thrives on healthy competition, fostering innovation and providing choices for consumers.”

Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, expressed optimism that the deal could be finalized before the October 18 deadline.
