Former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman made headlines today with a stunning public resignation from her position, accusing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of being “weak” and failing to fulfill key promises to the British people. In a scathing three-page letter posted on social media, Braverman expressed her disappointment in Sunak, alleging that he had not upheld their shared commitment to crucial policies.
Braverman claimed that she had supported Sunak based on his assurances regarding various policies, but felt betrayed by his failure to follow through. She accused Sunak of neglecting promises to address illegal migration, stop migrant boats from crossing the English Channel, issue guidance to schools on protecting biological sex, and deliver on the north Ireland protocol.
In addition, Braverman criticized Sunak’s handling of a Supreme Court ruling on asylum seekers and his rejection of a withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights, calling it a “betrayal” and accusing him of opting for “wishful thinking” over facing hard choices.
Her resignation comes after controversial comments she made about the police’s handling of a pro-Palestinian march, in which she accused the police of “playing favorites” and claimed they largely ignored “pro-Palestinian mobs”. These comments drew criticism from the Opposition Labour Party and led to mounting pressure for her removal from Sunak’s cabinet.
