Amid a shake-up of his top Cabinet, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dismissed controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman.

Foreign Minister James Cleverly will replace Braverman, with former Prime Minister David Cameron taking on the new role of foreign minister in an unexpected move.

Cleverly expressed his “honour to be appointed as Home Secretary” on social media platform X, vowing to keep the country safe.

Meanwhile, Cameron highlighted the daunting global challenges and the importance of the country strengthening relationships and influencing the world.

Braverman had been under fire for her concerns regarding London police and past comments about pro-Palestine marches, facing widespread criticism and undermining confidence in the police ahead of a substantial protest.

A shift in the ruling Conservative Party comes as Sunak seeks to reposition the party in the face of challenges.

The U.K. has officially endorsed Israel’s right to self-defense after terror attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas. Sunak has supported calls for a humanitarian pause in Israel’s retaliatory actions in the Gaza Strip.

In recent events, Conservative frontbencher Paul Bristow was removed from his position after urging Sunak to demand a permanent cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. Braverman also faced public backlash for her comments about homelessness and proposed policies.

The reshuffle aligns with Sunak’s efforts to assert authority and reposition the Conservative Party ahead of a general election.
