UConn Women’s Basketball Team Scores First Season Victory Against Dayton

The 102-58 season-opening victory of second-ranked UConn over Dayton in Hartford, Conn. was a showcase of the team’s depth and defense. Every player stepped onto the court for the Huskies, and six of them had double-digit scores, with Aaliyah Edwards leading the way with 23 points.

UConn’s suffocating defense resulted in 21 turnovers forced and a thriving transition game. The team attributed this defensive success to their depth, as they highlighted in the postgame press conference.

Head coach Geno Auriemma praised the team’s ability to adapt to different defensive strategies based on the player combinations on the court. “Every time you make a substitution, the game’s going to change a little bit — and we made a lot of them,” he said.

Aaliyah Edwards, an All-American from last season, mentioned the team’s success in pushing the pace in the second quarter, capitalizing on turnovers and defensive rebounds to generate points in transition.

Guard Paige Bueckers, playing her first game for UConn since the National Championship game in April 2022, highlighted the team’s versatility, emphasizing that any given night could see different players leading in scoring, assisting, and rebounding.

UConn’s pursuit of its 12th national championship has kicked off, with upcoming games against RV NC State and #14 Maryland. The team’s next game will be in Raleigh, NC before returning home to Gampel Pavilion.
