Uber Driver Shot by Passenger Who Mistook Him for Kidnapper

A Kentucky woman is facing murder charges after shooting an Uber driver in Texas, in a mistaken belief that he was kidnapping her. Daniel Piedra, a newly-employed Uber driver, was transporting Phoebe Copas to a casino in southeast El Paso to meet her boyfriend when the incident occurred. Copas noticed signs for Juarez, Mexico, during the ride and became convinced she was being abducted. In response, she opened fire, causing a collision that led to Piedra’s death.

After receiving a call about the shooting, police arrived at the scene to find Copas’ boyfriend assisting her out of the vehicle. Copas had texted a photo of Piedra to her boyfriend before calling 911. The shooting took place far from the Mexican border, contradicting her belief that she was being taken to Mexico. Uber has expressed horror at the incident and is fully cooperating with the investigation. Copas, initially charged with aggravated assault, now faces a murder charge following Piedra’s death. She is currently held at the El Paso County Jail with a bond set at $1.5 million. A GoFundMe campaign set up for Piedra’s family has raised nearly $70,000.

Piedra’s niece, Didi Lopez, hopes for justice and emphasizes that communication and rational thinking could have prevented the tragic incident.
