Uber app now includes plane and train ticket bookings

Uber is expanding its services beyond minicabs to become an all-encompassing transport hub. In the coming months, users will be able to purchase inter-city train and coach tickets through the Uber app. Later in the year, the company plans to offer plane and Eurostar tickets for tourists. Additionally, Uber will allow people to rent cars throughout the UK via the app, with hotel booking capabilities to be added at a later date. These developments illustrate Uber’s move towards a comprehensive transport booking system.

Having recently secured a new London licence, Uber is in the final stages of negotiating agreements with operators to sell these tickets. The tickets will be available as QR codes within the app, and Uber cars will be utilized for transportation to and from stations or airports.

More than 40% of Uber’s current trips in the UK either start or end near public transport facilities. By enabling users to purchase train and coach tickets, Uber aims to showcase how it complements public transport rather than replacing it. While the company will receive a fee for booking transport, it also believes that this feature will drive more people to take an Uber to a station.

Uber has faced criticism for contributing to congestion in major cities, but it argues that it reduces private car ownership. The app has provided public transport directions since 2019 but is now adding the ability to purchase tickets as well.

Although the pandemic disrupted Uber’s plans to transform into a full transport service, the company is now making progress towards this goal. Uber UK boss Jamie Heywood believes that these changes will transform Uber into a comprehensive, one-stop shop for all travel needs. In addition to the new ticket purchasing feature, Uber already allows users to rent bikes and scooters through the app in the UK.
