DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union is set to announce expanded strikes at General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis plants if negotiations do not make significant progress by 10 a.m. ET Friday, according to a reliable source.

The union-imposed deadline follows the UAW’s previous announcement of expanding strikes at assembly plants for General Motors and Stellantis. However, Ford’s strikes have not been expanded due to reported progress in the ongoing talks.

It is anticipated that UAW President Shawn Fain will host a Facebook Live event to reveal the plants that will participate in the walkout on Friday if progress is not made in the negotiations.

The current strikes involve approximately 18,300 workers, accounting for about 12.5% of the UAW’s total membership.

Representatives from the Detroit automakers did not respond immediately for comments on Wednesday.

The union’s new deadline comes a day after President Joe Biden made history by joining Fain and the striking auto workers on the picket line. President Biden expressed his support for the union’s demands, including a 40% wage increase over the duration of the contract.
