UAAP: UP remains flawless while Ateneo defends its title and regains stability

Ateneo’s Kai Ballungay showcased his skills against University of the East (UE) defenders in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament. The game between Ateneo and UE was a hard-fought battle with both teams displaying poise and character. Ateneo managed to secure a 76-69 victory over UE, bringing their record to 2-2 and putting their title-retention bid back on track. Meanwhile, University of the Philippines (UP) faced off against Far Eastern University (FEU) and came out with an 80-76 win after an extra five minutes of play, maintaining their undefeated status with a 4-0 record.
In another game, National University (NU) bounced back from their first loss with an impressive 87-69 victory against the University of Santo Tomas (UST). NU coach Jeff Napa credited his players for coming up with a game plan that helped them secure the win.
The first period of the game between NU and UST was closely contested, but the Bulldogs managed to break away and take a commanding 30-14 lead into the second quarter. Kai Ballungay played a crucial role in Ateneo’s victory, contributing 18 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Jared Brown also made significant contributions with crucial three-pointers. Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin praised his team’s defensive efforts in the fourth quarter, which played a vital role in securing the win.
The game between UP and FEU was a nail-biter, with UP surviving a big blunder by Malick Diouf at the end of regulation. The referees called Diouf for offensive basket interference, which took away UP’s buzzer-beating game-winner and sent the game into overtime. UP eventually emerged victorious with a final score of 77-73. Janjan Felicilda led the way for UP with 17 points, while CJ Cansino and Diouf also made significant contributions.
Both teams had to play without key players, as UP was missing Gerry Abadiano due to concussion protocols, and FEU was without Cholo Añonuevo, who suffered a fractured right hand. UP looks to continue their winning streak against Santo Tomas in their next game, while Ateneo aims to build on their recent victory in their next match.
