Two U.S. citizens discovered deceased inside their hotel room in Mexico’s Baja California Sur

The seaside community of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, has been struck by tragedy as two Americans were discovered deceased in their hotel room.

The victim identified so far is Abby Lutz, according to her family who spoke to CBS News. In a statement, her family described Abby as someone with an adventurous spirit and a kind heart, who loved traveling and sharing her zest for life with others.

According to her family, Abby and her boyfriend initially believed they were suffering from food poisoning and sought medical treatment at a hospital. They started to feel better, but a few days later, they received the devastating news that both Abby and her boyfriend had passed away in their sleep.

Abby’s father had plans to meet up with her on Father’s Day, as mentioned on a GoFundMe page created to raise funds for funeral transportation expenses.

The tragic incident took place in the community of El Pescadero on Tuesday, situated between Todos Santos and the Los Cabos resort in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

While U.S. officials are aware of the case, they cannot provide further details due to privacy concerns.

Local police reported that paramedics received a call on Tuesday about the unconsciousness of the American couple. Unfortunately, by the time paramedics arrived, the couple had already passed away. The suspected cause of death is gas inhalation.

Mexico has witnessed several similar incidents caused by carbon monoxide or other gas poisoning. Improperly vented or leaky water heaters and stoves often produce these deadly gases.

In another unrelated case, in October, three U.S. citizens were found deceased in a rented apartment in Mexico, also suspected victims of gas inhalation.

The Mexico City police department reported that the three individuals were discovered unresponsive in an upscale neighborhood. Post-mortem examinations indicated that they died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mexico often lacks proper gas line installations, vents, and monitoring devices.

In 2018, a gas leak from a water heater caused the tragic deaths of an American couple and their two children in Tulum, a resort town south of Playa del Carmen. Authorities revealed that the gas leak could have been due to lack of maintenance or the age of the equipment.

In 2010, a poorly installed gas line at a hotel in Playa del Carmen resulted in an explosion that claimed the lives of five Canadian tourists and two Mexicans. The gas line, intended for a pool heating unit, had not been properly installed or maintained, and a spark from an electric switch or plug ignited the leaking gas.

Separately, in Playa del Carmen, three men have been ordered to stand trial on homicide charges for the killing of an Italian woman at a restaurant in May 30. The victim was a resident of Playa del Carmen rather than a tourist, and no motive has been disclosed by prosecutors.
