Two LA Council Members Arrested During Hospitality Worker Protest.

Around 200 individuals, including two Los Angeles City Council members, were arrested during a large union rally supporting hospitality workers. The rally, organized by UNITE HERE Local 11, caused the closure of a significant roadway leading to Los Angeles International Airport. Initially permitted to close only the westbound side of Century Boulevard between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the rally soon spilled onto both sides of the street.

The Los Angeles Police Department encountered the peaceful labor union protesters around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Century Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard. Prioritizing public safety and order, LAPD issued a dispersal order. Despite this, around 200 protesters were peacefully arrested and subsequently released, receiving citations for failing to disperse.

City Council members Hugo Soto-Martinez and Nithya Raman were among those arrested. Soto-Martinez voiced his support for the rally, emphasizing the challenges faced by individuals struggling to afford housing in Los Angeles. Raman took to Twitter to express her solidarity with UNITE HERE Local 11, stating that Los Angeles should be a city that supports and uplifts its workers.

Earlier this month, members of UNITE HERE Local 11 voted in favor of a potential strike against major hotel chains in their pursuit of better wages and working conditions. The union represents approximately 32,000 workers in various hospitality roles.
