Two Tennessee Democrats, who were expelled from the state’s GOP-controlled House due to a gun control protest, have successfully reclaimed their legislative seats. State Rep. Justin Jones emerged victorious against Republican candidate Laura Nelson, while state Rep. Justin Pearson defeated independent candidate Jeff Johnston.
The expulsion of these two lawmakers occurred in April after they joined protesters in demanding stronger gun control measures following a tragic school shooting in Nashville, which claimed the lives of three children and three adults. Alongside Pearson and Jones, state Rep. Gloria Johnson, a Democrat who is white, also participated in the demonstration but was not expelled like her counterparts.
During the expulsion hearing, Jones passionately defended his actions, stating that he was standing up for the young people who are disenfranchised and terrified by the increasing number of mass shootings. He criticized the House Republicans, accusing them of responding to their call for an assault weapons ban with an assault on democracy.
The expulsion of Jones and Pearson turned into a major embarrassment for the House GOP. Shortly after Jones’ expulsion, the Nashville Metropolitan Council voted unanimously to reinstate him on an interim basis. Two days later, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners followed suit with a unanimous vote to reinstate Pearson on an interim basis as well. Pearson expressed his gratitude to his supporters, stating that their voice and fight could not be expelled.
Adding to the GOP’s humiliation, Jones and Pearson managed to raise over $2 million through approximately 70,400 campaign donations from across the country following media coverage of their expulsions. In contrast, Nelson raised only $34,000 for her race against Jones, while Johnston raised less than $400 in his contest against Pearson.
This remarkable turn of events showcases the resilience and widespread support for these two lawmakers who stood up for stronger gun control measures. It also highlights the backlash faced by House Republicans and their failed attempt to silence their voices.
