Two Additional China-Based Firms Face US Import Ban due to Uyghur Labor

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday that two Chinese companies will lose their ability to export to the U.S. This decision was made due to their use of forced labor, specifically the exploitation of Uyghur labor in China’s Xinjiang province.

The car battery manufacturer and food additive company have been added to the U.S. sanctions list as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s effort to hold China accountable for its “ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity” against the Uyghur Muslim minority. These actions demonstrate the administration’s commitment to addressing human rights abuses and forced labor practices.

The DHS Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, stated, “We will continue to work with all our partners to keep goods made with forced labor from Xinjiang out of U.S. commerce while facilitating legitimate trade.”

A total of 24 Chinese companies have now faced sanctions under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which was passed in 2021 to combat forced labor use.

For almost a decade, the Chinese government has targeted Uyghurs, leading to the imprisonment and “reeducation” of over a million members of the minority group. The camps aim to erase their language, religion, and culture.

The U.S. has officially labeled China’s actions as a genocide.

The Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force, chaired by Robert Silvers, emphasized its commitment to eradicating forced labor worldwide. Silvers stated, “We will not tolerate forced labor in our supply chains and will always stand up against cruel and inhumane labor practices.”
