The headquarters of the company formerly known as Twitter in San Francisco had a brightly flashing “X” sign installed, but it was recently removed due to multiple complaints about its lack of permits and concerns about its safety and illumination. The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection received 24 complaints about the unpermitted structure, prompting the removal.

This comes after the company, now known as X and owned by Elon Musk, had already removed the Twitter sign and blue bird logo from the building, although that work had also been temporarily halted due to the lack of necessary permits. The removal process had left the “er” at the end of “Twitter” still intact until it was fully taken down.

The installation of the giant “X” sign had caught the attention of the city of San Francisco, which opened a complaint and launched an investigation into the matter. This chaotic rebranding of Twitter’s building signage reflects the haphazard way in which the social media platform itself is being transformed into X. While the X logo has replaced Twitter in many parts of the site and app, remnants of the original Twitter branding still remain.

Representatives for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
