TV Commentator’s Former Chief of Staff Refutes Embezzlement Allegation

The lawsuit filed by former CNN liberal political commentator Angela Rye against her former chief of staff, Naja P. Mix, has taken a new turn. Mix has now filed a 12-page answer requesting the dismissal of the lawsuit, along with a judgment in her favor and attorneys’ fees.

In response, Rye, who is the CEO of political advocacy firm IMPACT Strategies, is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages with the support of her legal team, which includes renowned attorneys Carl Douglas and Ben Crump.

The lawsuit alleges that Mix, who was trusted as the chief of staff, abused that trust by making unauthorized charges on a corporate credit account to fund her extravagant lifestyle. Rye claims that she was unaware of Mix’s actions during a period of personal challenges, such as an absent business manager and a writing sabbatical.

The alleged financial abuse involves multiple instances of extravagant spending, including dining at high-end restaurants, renting expensive cars, traveling first class, and even buying out the bar, all at Rye’s expense and without her knowledge.

Mix is accused of engaging in mail fraud, wire fraud, and embezzlement over a span of nearly two years using a corporate American Express card entrusted to her. Specific examples cited in the lawsuit include spending $1,325 at the Adults Only bar in Hollywood and paying a $2,500 deposit for a luxury apartment in Anaheim.

The lawsuit also mentions Mix purchasing Delta Airlines tickets for herself and her boyfriend to attend a homecoming event at Louisiana State University, as well as a significant bill at AC Hotel.

Continuing into 2022, Mix allegedly indulged in lavish spending, highlighted by a brunch at the Rooftop by JG at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, which cost $560 and included tequila and food.

Rye took action by reporting the alleged theft and embezzlement to the Los Angeles police on April 5. Despite the legal battle, she continues her work as a special correspondent for ESPN.
