Turkish Delight: A Breakfast at the Türkiye Ambassador’s Residence

In celebration of the centenary of the Republic of Türkiye, Turkish Ambassador, H.E. Niyazi Evren Akyol and Mme. Indri P. Akyol hosted a traditional breakfast feast. Türkiye, a country situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, boasts stunning coastlines along the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Currently, tourism rates in the country are on the rise, with Filipino visitors leading the way. This comes as no surprise, considering Türkiye’s incredible attractions, from the ancient city of Troy to the enchanting rock formations of Cappadocia and the breathtaking salt terraces of Pammukale. Not to mention the architectural wonders like Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul. Apart from its rich history, culture, and natural beauty, Türkiye’s cuisine is a major draw with its diverse and delicious flavors.

Earlier this June 2023, in honor of the centenary of the Republic of Türkiye, Turkish Ambassador Niyazi Evren Akyol and Mme. Indri Puspitasari Akyol warmly welcomed LIFESTYLE.INQ to a traditional Turkish Breakfast Feast. This esteemed event celebrated World Breakfast Day and showcased the quintessential Turkish breakfast experience. Ambassador Akyol elaborated on the key aspects of the feast, highlighting the exquisite combination of savory and sweet flavors, which can be enjoyed in any order. One particular staple was cheese, with various types like white cheese and cheddar, each possessing its unique characteristics. Dried apricots and figs accompanied by crunchy walnuts perfectly complemented the soft cheeses. Eggs also played a prominent role, with fried eggs mixed with beef cuts being a highlight of the breakfast. Ambassador Akyol explained that Turkish families enjoy eggs prepared in various forms, such as hard-boiled, sunny side up, or scrambled, based on personal preference.

No Turkish breakfast would be complete without olives. Ambassador Akyol emphasized the importance of the Mediterranean treasure at the start of the day, stating, “There are only a few countries in the world where olives are part of breakfast. These olives are different from the ones you find on pizza or in martinis. They’re fleshier, less bitter, and have a saltier taste.” The breakfast spread also featured a tantalizing selection of bread, with options like the ring-shaped pastry Simit, sesame-dipped and reminiscent of a French baguette or soft bagel, as well as fluffy Pogaca buns. It truly was a mix-and-match experience of savory and sweet delights. For those craving something sweet, there were irresistible honey dips and red jams to pair with fresh fruits. Vegetables were also plentiful, with roasted eggplant and delectable tomato and red pepper dips. Although traditional sausages like Sucuk and Pastirma were not available, alternative sausages were improvised for the occasion.

Adorning the table were decorative marble “evil eyes,” a symbol commonly found during Turkish travels. This breakfast event at the Turkish Ambassador’s residence in the Philippines provided a culinary adventure. And while it may be considered a rare experience, the joy of kahvaltı can be savored once again at The Peninsula Manila in celebration of the opening of The Peninsula Istanbul. The hotel is offering an “All-Things Turkish” afternoon tea set, featuring beloved baklava and the famous Turkish tea and coffee. Early birds can also enjoy the Traditional Turkish morning buffet at Escolta. With its light, healthy, and varied small plates, indulging in a traditional Turkish kahvaltı is undeniably an ideal way to start the day.
