Tupac Shakur’s Crown Ring Fetches $1.2 Million at Sotheby’s Auction

  • Tupac Shakur’s crown ring fetched a staggering $1.2 million at auction, as announced by Sotheby’s on Tuesday.
  • This exquisite gold ring is adorned with rubies and diamonds, and includes a tribute to his fiance Kidada Jones.
  • The ring was presented for auction by Yaasmyn Fula, the artist’s godmother.

Tupac Shakur’s unique crown-shaped ring, worn shortly before his untimely death, achieved a record-breaking sale price of nearly $1.2 million at Sotheby’s auction on Tuesday. It now holds the distinction of being the most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold.

In addition to the ring, Sotheby’s auctioned off various hip-hop memorabilia, including autographed letters from Shakur and a demo tape for his single “Trapped.” The ring, initially estimated to sell for $200,000 to $300,000, surpassed all expectations.

The auction lots were curated to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the musical genre, and featured items from iconic artists such as Mos Def, De La Soul, and Wu-Tang Clan.

The crown ring is crafted from 14-Karat gold and embellished with exquisite diamonds and rubies. Notably, it bears an inscription on the side that reads “Pac & Dada 1996,” symbolizing Shakur’s engagement to actress Kidada Jones.

The ring, custom designed by Shakur himself and crafted by jewelers in New York City, holds great significance. It reflects his fascination with Niccolo Machiavelli’s political manifesto “The Prince” and his self-coronation as “Makaveli” following imprisonment and signing with Death Row Records.

This remarkable piece of jewelry also made an appearance on Shakur’s finger during his final public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 4, 1996, just three days before his tragic murder in Las Vegas.

In a recent development, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department executed a search warrant at the residence of Duane Keith Davis as part of the ongoing investigation into Shakur’s unsolved killing. The police seized items such as computers, a copy of “Compton Street Legends” book, a Vibe magazine issue on Tupac, photographs, and other documents.
