Legendary rapper Tupac Shakur was commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, almost 30 years after his untimely death due to a drive-by shooting. The emotional ceremony was a fitting tribute to the rapper who had a meteoric rise in the music industry, from being a backup dancer to becoming a self-styled gangsta and an influential figure in hip-hop. Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, represented the Shakur family at the ceremony held in Los Angeles and expressed her pride in seeing her brother’s greatness unfold.
Infamous for his intense lyrics and on-stage persona, Shakur sold over 75 million records with songs like “California Love” and “Changes.” He also perpetuated the East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop rivalry with his involvement in the West Coast scene. Despite being born in New York, Shakur thrived in California and became an identifiable figure in the state’s music community. He was shot dead in Las Vegas in 1996, following incidents that remain controversial to this day.
Towards the end of his life, Shakur was known for his gangsta persona and had several brushes with violence, eventually leading to him being incarcerated on sexual assault charges. However, his music also highlighted the plight of Black Americans, tackling issues such as police brutality and mass incarceration. Shakur’s mother, Afeni, named him after a revolutionary Inca chief Tupac Amaru and was involved in the Black Panther movement, and both mother and son are the subjects of the TV documentary “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur.”
The ceremony brought together a host of notable personalities, including director Allen Hughes and producer Jamal Joseph. The city of Los Angeles finally paid tribute to this icon almost three decades after his death, on what would have been his 52nd birthday. Tupac Shakur’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is a fitting tribute to a rapper who left an indelible mark on the music industry, inspiring countless artists and fans worldwide.
