The investment was prompted by the rapid growth of the AI market, which has fueled a surge in demand for TSMC’s advanced packaging solutions. The new facility will be situated in Tongluo Science Park in northern Taiwan and is expected to create around 1,500 local jobs.
TSMC’s CEO, C. C. Wei, confirmed the strong demand for AI chips during the company’s second-quarter earnings report. While TSMC is currently able to meet the demand for front-end processors, the company is experiencing some capacity constraints in advanced packaging. However, TSMC is actively working to increase its capacity to meet customer requirements and anticipates resolving the capacity issues by next year.
Advanced packaging is a crucial stage in semiconductor production, involving the packaging and connection of chips to enable their integration into electronic devices. The Central News Agency reported that TSMC’s packaging production capacity is currently in short supply due to competition from Nvidia and AMD, two of the company’s largest clients based in the United States.
In addition to TSMC’s investment, market observers predict that equipment factories operated by companies like Wanrun, Hongsu, and Xinyun, which manufacture chip-related equipment, will also benefit from TSMC’s advanced packaging expansion plan.
On Tuesday, TSMC’s shares rose by 1.97% in Asia, reflecting the market’s optimism surrounding these developments.
