Trump’s Impact on the Economy Raises Worries About Old Age Concerns and Inflation

A recent poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal reveals that President Joe Biden’s age and his handling of the economy are significant weaknesses as he prepares for a potential rematch with former President Donald Trump. The poll, which included 1,500 registered voters contacted from August 24th to 30th, indicates that Biden’s overall job approval is at 42%, with a disapproval rate of 57%.

A majority of registered voters, 60%, expressed concerns about Biden’s mental fitness for the presidency. Additionally, 73% of respondents believed that Biden is too old to run for president, a higher percentage than the response for Trump, who is 77 years old.

The poll, conducted by Democratic pollster Michael Bocian and Tony Fabrizio, the former pollster for Trump’s 2016 campaign, had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Regarding specific issues, the poll showed that majorities of registered voters disapproved of Biden’s handling of the economy (59%), inflation (63%), and the growth of the middle class (58%). The administration’s efforts to create jobs received mixed responses from respondents. Biden also received net negative approval ratings for his handling of the war in Ukraine and U.S. dealings with China.

Despite Biden’s efforts to highlight positive developments in the economy and claim credit for them, the poll indicates that widespread pessimism persists. Voters expressed a negative outlook on the state of the U.S. economy, with 63% viewing its strength negatively and 58% believing it has worsened over the past two years. Inflation was particularly concerning, with 74% of respondents believing it has moved in the wrong direction over the past year.

Housing costs were seen as moving in the wrong direction by 86% of voters, and more than half, 54%, said their personal financial situations had worsened in the same period. However, opinions on the job market were divided, with 45% believing it has improved and 44% believing it has worsened in the past year.

In terms of the upcoming 2024 presidential election, voters were evenly split between Biden and Trump, with both candidates receiving 46% support. The poll also revealed that both candidates were viewed unfavorably by 58% of respondents, while 39% had a favorable opinion of them.

According to pollster Michael Bocian, voters are seeking change and do not view either Biden or Trump as the change they desire. Trump’s primary challenger, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, received a favorable opinion from only 37% of voters. However, among Republican primary voters, Trump held a significant lead over DeSantis, with 59% stating they would vote for him compared to only 13% for DeSantis.

Overall, the poll suggests that Biden will face significant challenges in the upcoming election, particularly related to concerns about his age and handling of the economy. Voters are seeking change but have yet to find a candidate they view favorably.
