Trump’s attorneys hold discussions with prosecutors prior to potential election indictment

Lawyers representing Donald Trump held a meeting with members of special counsel Jack Smith’s team, potentially in anticipation of an indictment regarding the former president’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. The meeting, which included Trump’s lawyer John Lauro, was confirmed by Trump himself in a post on his Truth Social network.

Trump stated that his attorneys had a productive meeting with the Department of Justice (DOJ), emphasizing that he believes he did nothing wrong and was advised by multiple lawyers. He also expressed concern that an indictment against him would have further detrimental effects on the country. Notably, Trump mentioned that no indication of notice was given during the meeting.

Recently, Smith’s office informed Trump, who is currently the frontrunner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, that he is a target of the DOJ’s investigation, indicating that an indictment could be imminent.

The investigation primarily focuses on the contentious period following the November 2020 election, during which Trump refused to accept his loss to Joe Biden and propagated false claims of election fraud. This led to the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, where Trump loyalists violently stormed the building, attacked police officers, and disrupted the certification of electoral votes. The subsequent federal investigation has resulted in charges against over 1,000 individuals related to the Capitol riot.

In the time between the election and the riot, Trump exerted pressure on local election officials to overturn their states’ voting results, urged Vice President Mike Pence to obstruct the certification of electoral votes, and falsely asserted that the election had been stolen. Despite the lack of evidence supporting his fraud allegations, numerous officials, courts, campaign staffers, and even Trump’s own attorney general have refuted these claims.

A spokesperson for Smith declined to comment on the meeting, and Lauro, Trump’s lawyer, has not responded to requests for comment.

In addition to the potential indictment over the election, Trump faces charges from Smith’s team for unlawfully possessing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. He has also been indicted in New York for allegedly falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to a porn actor. Prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia, are also preparing to announce charging decisions related to attempts to undermine the election in that state.
