Trump’s Attempts to Utilize Hunter Biden as a Weapon against the President

Former President Donald J. Trump has consistently used Hunter Biden as a means to undermine President Biden and the recent guilty plea has provided another opportunity for attack as Trump eyes a third presidential nomination within the Republican party.

The criticism of Hunter Biden has been a popular talking point for Trump and his allies, particularly during the 2020 election campaign. In fact, it was during the lead-up to this campaign that Trump was first impeached in 2019 for abusing power and obstructing Congress. The charges stemmed from a phone call Trump made to President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, in which he pressured Zelensky to investigate leading Democrats and initiate an inquiry into Hunter Biden.

Even before Biden became the Democratic nominee, Trump repeatedly propagated unsubstantiated claims in an effort to connect his rival to his son’s allegedly corrupt business dealings.

In 2019, Trump publicly called for China to investigate Hunter Biden’s financial activities in the country. He made baseless allegations that Hunter Biden had earned millions of dollars from China and had used his political connections to persuade China to invest $1.5 billion in a fund he was involved in.

During campaign rallies, Trump frequently accused Hunter Biden of corruption, often referring to a New York Post article about a laptop seized by the FBI.

In an October 2020 presidential debate, Trump baselessly suggested that Biden both worked as a consultant and used his former position as vice president to secure business deals for his son. These attacks drew greater public attention to Hunter Biden’s actions, with searches for “Hunter Biden” skyrocketing after the debate.

Just two weeks before the 2020 election, Trump called on his attorney general, William P. Barr, to take action against Biden for his son’s work.

Now, facing federal charges related to classified documents, Trump and many Republicans are attempting to portray Hunter Biden’s plea agreement with federal prosecutors as lenient and to establish a narrative of double standards.

After the guilty plea was announced on Tuesday, Trump compared Hunter Biden’s charges to a mere “traffic ticket” on his Truth Social website.
