Pence, who served as Trump’s running mate in both the 2016 and 2020 campaigns, was a strong supporter throughout Trump’s term. However, their relationship soured when Pence refused to aid in overturning the 2020 election results. Trump expresses disappointment in the disloyalty he perceives in politics.
On Saturday, Pence announced his withdrawal from the 2024 GOP presidential primary race stating, “It’s become clear to me it’s not my time.” He made this announcement during a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition Conference, emphasizing that although it is not his time, he believes it is still the American people’s time.
Pence had launched his presidential campaign in June, joining a long list of Republicans vying for the presidency alongside Trump, who remains the leading contender. Despite current criticism of Trump, Pence has expressed his pride in serving in the Trump-Pence administration.
Following Pence’s exit from the race, some of his former rivals offered their support. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis praised Pence as a principled man of faith who has tirelessly advanced the conservative cause. DeSantis and his wife Casey appreciate the effort put forth by Pence and his wife Karen in their campaign and wish them well in their future endeavors.
