In a civil business fraud trial involving Donald Trump, a New York judge has issued a limited gag order after Trump made derogatory comments about a court staffer. Judge Arthur Engoron imposed the order, which applies to all parties in the case, specifically addressing attacks on court staff. Trump had previously criticized Allison Greenfield, Engoron’s principal law clerk, on social media. Trump, who is considered a front-runner for the 2024 presidential election, repeatedly claims that the lawsuit and trial are politically motivated by New York’s Democratic attorney general, Letitia James.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his disapproval of Greenfield’s collaboration with the judge in the courtroom, stating that it was “disgraceful.” He also commented on Greenfield’s involvement with the judge, suggesting that she shouldn’t be influencing his decisions and expressing that she “hates Trump.” CNN reports that while attending the trial for the second day, Trump maintained a steely gaze towards the judge as the gag order was issued. Engoron mentioned that although the post was subsequently deleted, it had already been sent to millions of recipients via email.
The judge declared the gag order as an official prohibition on all parties from publicly discussing, posting, or emailing about any members of his staff. He warned that failure to comply with the order would result in severe consequences. Throughout the trial, Trump and the lawyers from both sides held closed-door discussions during the lunch break, leading to the imposition of the gag order. After the conclusion of testimony, another private discussion took place, causing journalists and others to be excluded from the courtroom once again. Trump emerged from the courtroom stating that he would return the following day.
