Donald Trump, who has been indicted for the third time on Tuesday, made a plea for financial support from his followers on Wednesday, stating that he could potentially face more than 500 years in prison. In a fundraising email, Trump mentioned, “With Crooked Joe’s corrupt DOJ having unlawfully INDICTED yours truly yet again, reports indicate that I could now face a combined 561 YEARS in prison from the Left’s witch hunts,” as reported by the Hill. As the number of indictments and lawsuits against the former president continues to increase, so do his legal expenses. However, Politico reports that the trend of surging fundraising may be diminishing.
Based on data filed with the Federal Election Commission by Republican donation processor WinRed, it was revealed that on April 4, during Trump’s court appearance on state charges in New York, he managed to raise close to $4 million from 80,000 donors, making it his most successful online fundraising day this year. On the other hand, when he appeared in federal court in Miami on June 13, linked to the Mar-a-Lago documents case, his fundraising amount was $1.3 million from approximately 35,000 donors. According to reports, Trump’s super PAC spent over $40 million on legal fees in the first half of this year.
Chris Christie, a rival of Trump within the GOP, criticized the former president for using funds donated by middle-class Americans to cover his legal expenses. In an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, the former New Jersey governor suggested that Trump could easily finance his legal battles by selling one of his buildings or golf courses, rather than accepting donations from everyday Americans who believe their contributions are intended to support his presidential campaign.
