Aug. 3 (UPI) —
The Russian government has fined Apple for not removing information about the war in Ukraine, which is prohibited in Russia.

In a separate ruling issued on the same day, the court also fined the Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, about $31,000 for the same reason.

The judge, Timur Vakhrameev, stated, “Apple Distribution International was found to be liable for an administrative offense under Article 13.41, Part 2, of the Russian Administrative Offenses Code. They have been fined 400,000 rubles ($4,200),” as reported by the state-backed Tass news agency.

The court session, according to Tass, was conducted privately.

Apple representatives requested a closed-door session to protect trade secrets. While the court partially granted the request by asking non-company individuals to leave before the ruling, they did not officially declare a closed session.

The court determined that Apple failed to remove applications and podcasts containing what the Russian government considers false information about the war in Ukraine, which Russia classifies as a “special military operation.”

Last year, Apple withdrew its products from Russia in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In July, the Russian government prohibited the use of iPhones by government employees, citing security concerns.

Earlier this year, the messaging service WhatsApp was fined for its failure to remove prohibited information.
