During the prosecution of former President Donald Trump’s latest criminal case, his attorney emphasized that Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results were based on advice he received from legal experts.
John Lauro, the defense attorney, specifically pointed to John Eastman, a well-known conservative lawyer who played a significant role in urging Vice President Mike Pence to declare Trump the winner falsely.
Eastman, referred to as “Co-Conspirator 2” in the indictment, is one of the six individuals accused of conspiring with Trump to overturn Biden’s victory.
Lauro defended Trump’s actions by highlighting that he had received counsel from a respected constitutional scholar like Eastman, who deemed his requests to Pence legal and constitutional.
“Having an actual opinion from counsel that what President Trump asked Vice President Pence to do was completely lawful and constitutional eliminates any criminal intent,” Lauro stated, emphasizing that Trump’s goal was to uncover the truth.
Lauro maintained this argument even when confronted with the fact that other lawyers and officials had warned Trump about his electoral loss to President Joe Biden.
The indictment against Trump accuses him and his co-conspirators of engaging in fraudulent activities to subvert Biden’s victory by spreading false claims of election fraud in crucial states.
Trump has been summoned to appear in court for his charges on Thursday.
Eastman’s legal team released a statement criticizing the indictment and denying any involvement in plea bargaining with federal prosecutors.
In an interview, Lauro also defended the scheme orchestrated by Eastman and other co-conspirators, claiming that the alternate electors sent by pro-Trump factions were not fake, but rather legitimate.
Furthermore, Lauro suggested that Trump would seek to postpone the trial to a later date, arguing that the prosecution should have investigated earlier if they wanted a speedy trial.
