Trudeau announces Canada’s pledge of $500M in aid and provision of weapons to Ukraine

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged to commit another $500 million in aid to support Ukraine’s military in their fight against Russian invaders. This announcement was made during Trudeau’s unannounced visit to Kyiv, where he paid respects to fallen Ukrainian soldiers. He emphasized that Canada supports Ukraine’s bid for membership in NATO and called for Russia to completely and unconditionally withdraw its military forces from Ukraine. This renewed Canadian support comes at a critical time as there have been significant Ukrainian operations in the east and south since Thursday morning, with some gains in some areas. It remains unclear how the hydroelectric dam on the Dnieper River ruptured, worsening the humanitarian situation in southern Ukraine that was already undergoing shelling. Canada has joined other countries in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime for the incursion, including through economic sanctions. Trudeau reiterated that Russia is to blame for the conflict and called for peace to be achieved by ending Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
