Australian pop star Troye Sivan addresses criticism of his “Rush” music video featuring only thin models.

The release of the video sparked online backlash for its lack of body diversity.

In an interview with Billboard, Sivan, 28, acknowledges the criticism, explaining that diversity wasn’t a conscious consideration when making the video.

“We didn’t intend to showcase only one specific body type. The video was created without much thought regarding body diversity,” he said.

Sivan also defends himself against critics who mocked his own body type.

“Someone told me to ‘eat something, you stupid twinks,'” he shared. “Reading that really saddened me because I’ve struggled with my own body image. I believe that everyone’s body, including my own, is beautiful, and it’s disheartening to see people discussing others’ bodies.”

While some have criticized Sivan for the lack of body diversity in the “Rush” music video, others, like his former collaborator Charli XCX, have come to his defense.

In a tweet addressing the backlash, Charli XCX wrote: “I feel like we live in a world where audiences feel that expression or art isn’t worth their time unless it meets every unspoken requirement.”

She continued: “It’s incredibly boring. If something deviates from common aesthetics, it’s deemed ‘weird’ or ‘try-hard,’ but if something conforms, it’s labeled ‘offensive’ and ‘not diverse enough.’ What a dull discourse.”
