Troubling Update: Former USC Gynecologist Accused of Sexual Misconduct Discovered Deceased

George Tyndall, a former longtime USC campus gynecologist, was found dead in his Los Angeles home, according to one of his attorneys. Tyndall was awaiting trial on sex-related charges involving 16 patients who accused him of inappropriate behavior during medical exams. His close friend discovered him unresponsive and it is believed to be a natural death.

No autopsy will be performed on Tyndall as the Los Angeles Police Department declared it a natural death. His defense attorney stated that Tyndall had planned to testify and prove his innocence during the trial. His defense team aims to have the case dismissed once his death certificate is available.

Tyndall was facing several charges, including sexual penetration of an unconscious person and sexual battery by fraud. The alleged crimes took place between 2009 and 2016, with the women seeking medical treatment at USC’s student health center where Tyndall worked.

The case previously involved eight charges against five other women, but those charges were dismissed. Attorney John Manly, who represents some of Tyndall’s alleged victims, criticized the decision not to conduct an autopsy, stating that it allows Tyndall to escape justice and leaves hundreds of women without answers.

Another attorney, Gloria Allred, who represented victims in a civil lawsuit against Tyndall, expressed shock at the news of his death. She stated that many victims had been looking forward to the trial and the opportunity to confront him. She also criticized the justice system’s failure in handling the case.

Tyndall was scheduled to appear in court for a hearing, where his defense intended to request a reduction in bail and his release from electronic monitoring. The defense argued that he posed no threat and had already faced significant burden and restriction.

The controversy surrounding Tyndall’s actions led to multiple settlements, including an $852 million settlement in March 2021 and a $215 million class-action settlement in January 2020.

Despite allegations of a cover-up by USC officials, the university denies any wrongdoing and claims to have implemented new protocols to address complaints and ensure proper investigations. Tyndall surrendered his medical license in September 2019.
