In a recent press conference, Garth Brooks revealed that Trisha Yearwood offered to change her last name to Brooks after 17 years of marriage, but he politely declined the “sweet” gesture.

While discussing his new radio station with TuneIn Radio in Nashville, Tennessee, Today reported that Brooks shared details about Yearwood’s idea, which was her anniversary gift to the couple.

Brooks said, “(Yearwood) was sweet enough for our anniversary last year to have the documents where her official last name was Brooks.”

He added, “I declined it.”

According to the report, Brooks further explained his perspective on tradition by saying, “Jack Yearwood had two daughters: That Yearwood name is Trisha. I’d be fine changing my name to Yearwood. Tradition doesn’t count here. What counts is when you have two celebrities, don’t have one swallow the other.”

Earlier this week, Brooks faced backlash from conservative fans for selling Bud Light at his new Nashville bar. The controversy arose after Bud Light featured Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer, in a campaign. Despite calls for a boycott, Brooks stood by his decision and encouraged fans to approach his bar with an open mind.

When speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Brooks stated, “I think if you know Garth Brooks, no matter how long you’ve known him, [he’s] always been inclusive. We’re gonna need each other, trust me. So I think that [with regards to] diversity, inclusiveness, I think what you find is our differences are our greatest strengths.”
