Travel rewards can mitigate increasing prices for summer vacations, assisting in cost reduction

According to a recent Leger poll, Canadians are altering their summer travel plans due to the increasing costs of flights and hotels.

The poll revealed that one third of Canadians have either changed or cancelled their vacation plans because of these rising costs. Of those individuals, 43% are opting for more affordable accommodation, 41% are cutting back on activities and attractions, and 39% are choosing shorter trips.

“Travel costs are steadily rising,” says Natasha Macmillan, director of everyday banking with Ratehub.ca. “As people become more active and eager to travel, we are seeing these costs continue to increase.”

Macmillan suggests utilizing travel reward credit cards to find deals and save on travel expenses. “By using these cards for everyday purchases, you can save on travel, hotels, miles, and more,” she advises.

She also emphasizes the importance of finding the right credit card for your specific spending and reward needs rather than signing up for multiple cards. For example, if you spend a significant amount on groceries each week, Macmillan recommends finding a credit card that offers maximum point rewards for that expense.

If you already have a travel reward card, it’s advisable to check your point balances before making any travel plans. According to Tamara Elliott, a travel blogger at Globeguide.ca, many reward cards offer additional perks such as free Wi-Fi, checked luggage, and companion passes.

However, Elliott cautions that it’s essential to read the fine print when booking travel with points, as some options may not allow for refunds or cancellations. She suggests considering booking travel during shoulder seasons when costs are typically lower or exploring local attractions and activities for a staycation experience.

The Leger poll surveyed 1,526 Canadians and 1,000 Americans over the age of 18 between July 14 and 26.
