Aug. 15 (UPI) — Typhoon Lan made landfall in the Kii Peninsula of western Japan on Tuesday, causing injuries due to the heavy rain and strong winds in the region.

The Japan Meteorology Agency warned residents in eastern, central, and western Japan about the risks of flash flooding, landslides, and strong winds.

Tottori and Okayama prefectures experienced the most impact from the typhoon, as they encountered heavy rainfall caused by a “linear precipitation zone.” This zone consists of bands of concentrated rain clouds that can linger over an area, leading to intense rainfall.

In the 24-hour period until the morning of August 15, Odai in Mie Prefecture and Nachikatsuura in Wakayama Prefecture received nearly 30 inches of rain.

A linear rainband formed over Okayama and Tottori prefectures before 8 a.m. local time, potentially bringing torrential rain to the Kanto-Koshin, Chugoku, and Shikoku regions.

The Kinki region is forecasted to receive nearly 13 inches of rain, while Chugoku is expected to see around 10 inches, and Shikoku, Hokuriku, and Kanto-Koshin might have 7.8 inches of rainfall.

The typhoon also caused power outages, affecting approximately 20,000 houses in Osaka Prefecture, 13,000 houses in Wakayama Prefecture, 5,400 houses in Aichi Prefecture, and many areas in Mie Prefecture.

The storm had a significant impact on travel, with Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways Co. canceling over 560 flights, particularly those involving western Japan. Additionally, bullet train services between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka, as well as Shin-Osaka and Okayama, were suspended by Central Japan Railway and West Japan Railway.
