Travel Chaos in the UK Ignites Due to Air Traffic Control Issues

  • There are delays in flights to and from the UK due to air traffic control issues.
  • Britain’s National Air Traffic Service (NATS) has implemented traffic flow restrictions for safety reasons.
  • “We are experiencing delays, and there may be cancellations,” stated London Gatwick Airport.

Flights to and from the UK are experiencing delays on Monday due to technical issues faced by the air traffic control operator.

NATS stated that it implemented traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety after encountering a technical issue.

“Engineers are currently working to identify and resolve the problem,” said NATS. The organization apologized for any inconvenience caused by the disruption and advised passengers to check their flight status with their respective airlines.

“To clarify, UK airspace is not closed,” reassured NATS. “We have implemented air traffic flow restrictions to ensure safety.”

These problems arise towards the end of a holiday weekend in the UK.

A representative from Heathrow, the largest airport in Britain, stated, “Due to national airspace issues, there may be flight disruptions across the UK. Passengers are advised to check for the latest information from their airlines. We are closely collaborating with NATS and other airport partners to minimize the impact on passengers.”

“Delays and cancellations are likely” at London Gatwick Airport, according to an insider representative.

Stansted, another airport in London, announced on X that it is “operating as usual,” but some flights to and from airports across the country are affected by the air traffic control issue.

One passenger informed Insider, “We are on flight RK814 from Dublin to Edinburgh and we are currently grounded with limited information. We boarded but were informed of a 6-7 hour delay. The pilot’s current estimate is 4 hours and 20 minutes.”

CBS reporter Emmet Lyons posted on X that he was waiting for an easyJet plane to take off from Majorca, Spain, when the pilot informed passengers about the issue with UK air traffic control.

He shared a screenshot of a travel update from EasyJet, which stated that the issue is impacting “all flights entering or leaving United Kingdom airspace” and warned of potential knock-on effects on other routes.

Another passenger reported on X that she has also been sitting on a plane at Shannon Airport in Ireland for an hour.
