Transforming the World’s First GPS Smartwatch into a Life-long Personal Trainer- Garmin’s Scoppen Lin’s Journey

Innovators face the challenge of distinguishing between gimmicks and genuinely revolutionary products. With the rise of the smartwatch, companies are promising the birth of never-before-seen technology, but many of these features are simply enticing quirks. Garmin stands out in this crowded market, offering a smartwatch that is bordering on a necessity instead of an indulgence.

Garmin has a rich history dating back to 1989 when it first entered the aviation industry, and later expanded into automotive, marine, and outdoor products. In 2003, it launched the world’s first running smartwatch, the Forerunner 201. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of this launch, Garmin has released its most powerful Forerunner smartwatches to date: the Forerunner 965 and 265.

The Forerunner 965 boasts an immense battery life of up to 23 days in smartwatch mode, and a titanium bezel paired with a 1.4-inch AMOLED display. It also has the world’s longest battery life for a running watch with an AMOLED display. Additionally, it comes equipped with Stamina and Acute Chronic Workload Ratio to help users track and manage their physical exertion during a run.

The Forerunner 265 has a Ground Gorilla Glass 4 lens with a battery life of up to 13 days on the 1.3-inch AMOLED display, and up to 15 days on the 1.1-inch AMOLED display (on the Forerunner 265S). It also includes performance monitoring tools from Garmin Firstbeat Analytics like VO2 max, performance condition, and training effect.

Scoppen Lin, Assistant General Manager for Garmin Asia, shared in an exclusive interview that Garmin’s consumers are people like himself who enjoy an active lifestyle and are data-driven. He added that in the future, people may pay more attention to their health and achievements in life, providing a good opportunity for Garmin.

Garmin also curates an interactive and innovative customer experience through events around the world. In some brand stores, they have a metro meter or a cycling trainer. In others, like the Garmin brand store in Cebu, they have a golf range inside to allow customers to experience their sport technology inside the store itself.

Looking ahead to the future, Scoppen hopes to see more health monitoring-related features on the Forerunner, providing a continuous 24-hour, seven-days-a-week check-up of sorts. Garmin stays at the forefront of the market by being dedicated to sports and health technology, with the longest and strongest battery life that keeps pace with newer releases.
