After Complaint, Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration Poem Moved by Florida School Library

A controversy has erupted over a Florida grade school’s decision to relocate a book containing Amanda Gorman’s poem, which she read at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, from the elementary section to the middle school section of the library following a parent’s complaint. The Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes decided to move the book, along with three others, to the middle school section after a committee reviewed the parent’s complaint and found that the materials were “more appropriate” for older students. Gorman has expressed her disappointment, alleging that the move breaches the First Amendment. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the move censorship and PEN America said it violates constitutional freedoms. The Florida Freedom to Read Project posted a copy of the complaint, which described the poem as “not educational” and containing “hate messages”.
