Tragic Twist: Insanity Plea from Reseda Mother Who Confessed Drowning Her 3 Young Children, as Reported by Orange County Register

In a shocking and tragic incident, a woman is facing three murder charges for allegedly drowning her three young children in a Reseda apartment two years ago. The accused, Liliana Carrillo, 32, entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity during her court appearance on October 6, 2023.

Carrillo stands accused of killing her 5-month-old daughter Sierra, 2-year-old son Terry, and 3-year-old daughter Joanna on April 10, 2021. She has been in jail since her arrest in Tulare County in April 2021 and was ordered to stand trial for the killings on August 23, 2023.

One of the murder charges against Carrillo includes an allegation that she used a knife during the commission of the crime. The brutal killings shocked the community and sparked an outpouring of grief from family members and neighbors.

The children’s grandmother made the horrifying discovery of their drowned bodies inside the Reseda apartment where they lived with Carrillo. Additionally, the coroner’s office revealed that baby Sierra had also suffered a stab wound to the chest, which had punctured her left lung.

Prior to the tragic events, court records revealed that family members were concerned about Carrillo’s deteriorating mental health, prompting the father of the children to request a mental evaluation for her in March 2021.

After allegedly killing the children, Carrillo fled the apartment, leading to a manhunt that spanned the Bakersfield area north of Los Angeles. Eventually, she was apprehended in Tulare County after crashing her car and attempting to carjack another person.

While in custody in Tulare County, Carrillo confessed to the crime during an interview with a local television station. She admitted to drowning the children and revealed that she had also attempted suicide, but it was unsuccessful.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Juvenile Division detective, Kim Lormans, testified that the children were found dead in a row on a bed inside the apartment. The scene was described as gruesome, with blood everywhere.

During the interview, Carrillo expressed her acceptance of spending the rest of her life in jail, acknowledging the gravity of her actions. Meanwhile, the children’s father, Erik Denton, filed a civil lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County in April 2022, alleging negligence in handling reports of Carrillo’s severe mental health issues.

It is a heart-wrenching case that has left the community devastated, and the trial will undoubtedly be closely watched as justice is sought for the innocent lives lost.
