In a tragic and shocking incident, three teenagers were killed and one was wounded in an abandoned house in South Carolina. The incident occurred when two individuals arrived at the house and opened fire on the group. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the motive behind the attack was an old dispute over a burglary. The authorities have arrested a 17-year-old suspect who now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The attackers pursued the victims into the backyard, continuing to fire shots, according to a redacted incident report. The feud between the parties involved reportedly started two years ago with a burglary. The sheriff’s department confirmed that three victims, aged 16 and 17, lost their lives in the hospital, while the fourth victim, a 14-year-old, was discharged after treatment.
Sheriff Leon Lott refrained from providing information on how the weapons were obtained, but he did mention the prevalent issue of gunowners leaving firearms in cars, making them susceptible to theft. Lott revealed that there were 100 cases of vehicle break-ins reported in Columbia over the weekend, prompting him to hold a news conference to address this recurring problem not only locally, but nationwide. This incident follows a similar incident earlier this year, where nine young individuals were injured in a park shooting involving students from Columbia-area high schools.
In response to the tragedy, district superintendent Craig Witherspoon, along with other elected officials, urged for increased out-of-school programs organized by churches, schools, and government entities. Lawmaker Gretchen Barron emphasized that while legislation cannot dictate individuals’ behavior or choices, the community as a whole needs to come together to combat such issues. Sheriff Lott echoed the sentiment, stating that more needs to be done to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
