Tragedy struck today when a charter bus carrying members of a high school marching band from Long Island crashed, resulting in the death of one student and numerous injuries. The New York Timesreports that five of the injured individuals are in critical condition and have been hospitalized.

The bus, operated by Regency Transportation, had passed its most recent safety inspection and the driver was properly licensed according to a spokesperson from the New York State Department of Transportation. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and no further details are available at this time.

Emergency services, including New York State Police and Homeland Security, are providing support to local crews at the scene of the accident, as stated by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. She expressed gratitude to the first responders for their swift action in saving lives and extended her sympathies to those affected by this devastating situation.

According to ABC 7 News, the deceased individual has been identified as an adult, while the critically injured passengers are believed to be students. Non-hospitalized students were taken to a nearby community center to be reunited with their families.

Donna Baltch, a teacher at Howitt Middle School, expressed her concern for the well-being of the students and chaperones on the bus, stating, “These kids go on a trip to have fun. This is something that they look forward to all year… We don’t know if they’re okay. Right now, we are just praying and hoping that they’re okay.”
