Tragic NYC Apartment Incident: Mom Reveals Son Ryan Furtado’s Fatal Accident with Peloton Bike

Tragic Lawsuit: Peloton Exercise Bike Kills Man in Brooklyn Apartment

A devastating lawsuit has been filed against Peloton, the popular home-exercise company, by a grieving mother who claims that her son was killed when one of their exercise bikes fell on him. The incident occurred in January 2022, just a week before the victim’s 33rd birthday, inside his Brooklyn apartment. According to the lawsuit, Johanna Furtado alleges that her son, Ryan, was using the bike to assist him in getting up from the floor as part of an exercise program when the bike suddenly spun around, impacting his neck and face, fatally severing his carotid artery. Ryan’s body was tragically discovered by the NYPD with the bike lying on his face.

Shocking as it may be, this is not the first time a Peloton bike has been involved in a fatal accident. In 2021, a 6-year-old child was killed and a 3-year-old suffered a brain injury due to incidents involving the Peloton Tread Plus model, which has since been discontinued.

Peloton, once a fitness darling during the pandemic, has experienced a significant decline in its reputation. Although the company managed to exceed sales expectations in its latest fiscal quarter, it reported a larger than anticipated loss, partly due to recall costs and changes in consumer spending.

The Lawsuit Details

Furtado’s lawsuit claims that Peloton should have recognized the potential misuse of their exercise bike and the risks involved in using it to pull oneself up from the floor during a workout. The suit argues that the company should have provided adequate warnings to users, beyond the disclaimer currently displayed on their bikes. The specific workout involved in the accident, known as the ‘Core’ workout, requires riders to disembark from the bike and perform exercises on the floor, with the bike being used for assistance with stretching.

Peloton, in response, denies any legal responsibility and attributes Furtado’s tragic death to his own negligence or intentional actions.

The Heartbreaking Loss

The obituary for Ryan Furtado describes him as a beloved colleague, dear friend, and a shining star. It highlights his love for family, friends, music, baking, games, and Star Wars. Ryan, a native of Maui, had been living in Brooklyn at the time of his death. A GoFundMe page was created to support his family with funeral costs and has raised nearly $17,000.

Peloton’s Challenges and Future

Peloton’s sales experienced remarkable growth during the pandemic, but as life returned to normal with the rollout of vaccines, sales began to decline. The company faced additional setbacks with recalls and job cuts. However, Peloton remains optimistic and aims to shift its focus from home workouts to a broader audience by promoting inclusivity and offering new pricing and free classes through its app.

CEO Barry McCarthy addressed the challenges faced by Peloton and expressed confidence in the company’s ability to achieve positive cash flow in the future. Peloton plans to reintroduce its Tread+ treadmill in the U.S., equipped with a new rear guard designed to enhance safety.

The tragic death of Ryan Furtado serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of exercise equipment safety and the need for companies like Peloton to prioritize user protection.
