Tragic Loss: Son of Wilmington Firefighter Dies at Memorial Event

A Tragedy in Wilmington: 3-Year-Old Son of Firefighter Struck and Killed Before Memorial Walk

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) – A heartbreaking incident occurred in Delaware over the weekend when the 3-year-old son of a firefighter was struck and killed shortly before a memorial walk to honor three firefighters who lost their lives in a blaze seven years ago.

The memorial walk, organized by off-duty Wilmington firefighters, family members, and friends, was scheduled to take place on the same day that the tragic incident occurred.

According to Capt. Matthew Marsella, the child, who was the son of an off-duty firefighter, was struck by a vehicle driven by another off-duty firefighter who was attempting to park and participate in the memorial event. The young boy was taken to Wilmington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Names of the child and the driver have not been released at this time.

The Wilmington Police Department is currently conducting an investigation and encourages anyone with information to come forward and assist in the case.

Wilmington Mayor Michael Purzycki expressed his deep sadness and condolences in a statement, stating that he was heartbroken by the tragic incident that affected the city’s firefighting family. He emphasized that this devastating incident occurred on a day already filled with sorrow as the department was mourning the loss of three firefighters.

In September 2016, Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes of the Wilmington Fire Department lost their lives at the scene of a row house fire in the Canby Park neighborhood. Another firefighter, Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope, was critically injured and later passed away after being hospitalized for several weeks.

The individual responsible for setting fire to the basement of the home, Beatriz Fana-Ruiz, pled guilty to second-degree murder, arson, and assault in 2019. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison, and federal immigration authorities have indicated that they will seek her deportation to the Dominican Republic, her home country.
