A tragic incident unfolded at a Walmart in Georgia when a 20-year-old woman, Zoey Nicole Messenger, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend. The assailant, identified as James Wyatt Nicholas Norton, 26, who was also an employee at the store, then turned the gun on himself, resulting in their deaths.
The Hiram Police Department released a statement on their Facebook page confirming the incident and the fatal outcome for both individuals involved.
According to authorities, Norton calmly approached Messenger for a brief conversation before unexpectedly pulling out a handgun and shooting her. The motive behind the attack is unclear, and it is uncertain whether Norton was on duty at the time of the incident.
Law enforcement received reports of gunshots being fired at the Walmart around 7:22 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found chaos as people fled the building in fear.
Witness Devani Lopez, who was inside the store during the incident, recounted the harrowing experience. He immediately made his way towards the exit upon hearing the second gunshot, alongside many others who were in a state of panic and terror.
Messenger’s social media activity revealed that she had been in a relationship with Norton since 2022. However, in a recent Facebook post, she announced that she had moved on and entered a new relationship.
Friends and family expressed their shock and sorrow over Messenger’s tragic death, remembering her as a vibrant and loving individual.
A Walmart spokesperson confirmed Norton’s employment at the company and expressed condolences to the affected employees. Walmart is offering on-site counseling services and is fully cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation.
